Observations : Au cours d'une pause d'une session d'enregistrement, Little Richard fredonne Tutti frutti, un titre obscène et se trompe dans les paroles. En lieu et place de "Tutti frutti, good booty", il chante "Tutti frutti, aw rootie" et enchaîne par "A-wop-bop-a-loo-bop-a-lop-bam-boom". Cette chanson parle ouvertement d'homosexualité, "tutti frutti" étant l'argot américain de l'époque pour désigner une "folle". Frappé par le potentiel commercial de la mélodie, le producteur Robert Blackwell fit réécrire les paroles.

Enregistrée à La Nouvelle-Orléans, Tutti Frutti est l'une des premières chansons de rock 'n' roll interprétée par Little Richard. Ce dernier, au chant et au piano, est accompagné de Justin Adams à la guitare, Frank Fields à la basse, Earl Palmer à la batterie, Lee Allen au sax alto et Alvin "Red" Tyler au sax baryton.

Notons que Little Richard, qui est l'un des premiers musiciens noirs à connaître les faveurs du public blanc, a signé, sur son premier 45 tours, quatre des plus grands standards de rock, à savoir : Tutti Frutti, Long Tall Sally, Rip It Up et Ready Teddy.

En 2004, Tutti Frutti a été classée par le magazine Rolling Stones à la 43e place dans la liste des "Cinq cents plus grandes chansons de tous les temps".

La version de Little Richard ne comprenant pas de solo de guitare, les Rocking Chairs ont préféré reprendre celle de Carl Perkins qui, lui-même, prend un chorus.
